Steelmaking is one of Europe’s most energy-intensive industries, and its processes release large amounts of heat that traditionally escape unused. Capturing this excess energy turns a once-lost by-product into a valuable local resource. Waste heat recovery supports the circular economy by reusing energy instead of letting it go to waste, reducing overall consumption, and lowering the environmental impact of industrial production.

When the surplus heat from steelmaking is channelled into district heating systems, communities benefit from reliable heating that replaces fossil fuels. This shift cuts CO₂ emissions, improves air quality, and reduces dependence on external energy sources. At the same time, industries gain efficiency, while local regions benefit from stable and predictable heat supply.

HURRICANE Project showcases how circular thinking can reshape heavy industry. By exploring how ArcelorMittal Belgium’s waste heat can be captured and redistributed, the project demonstrates that steelmaking can play a central role in building cleaner, more resilient energy systems. Circular heat is not just an environmental solution — it is a pathway to long-term regional value and climate-neutral industry.
