Exploring Conductive Heat Recovery from Hot-Rolled Coils

A dedicated hot-coil simulator has been developed at CRM Group, capable of reproducing the heat release of industrial hot-rolled steel coils at temperatures up to 600 °C, representative of real hot rolling mill conditions.

This unique setup is used to test novel heat exchanger concepts, including conductive heat exchangers designed to directly extract heat from industrial coils as they leave the hot rolling process.

The recovered thermal energy is intended to be injected into a heat grid, enabling the valorisation of high-temperature process heat that would otherwise be lost.

By combining realistic laboratory simulation with innovative heat exchanger design, this work contributes to the transition from waste heat to usable energy at industrial scale.
